Letter From Our Founder & CEO To All Freedom Clip Customers

Dear Customer,

We are very sorry about the length of time it has taken to get your Freedom Clip to you.

We are a family business trying to do the right thing. We designed the Freedom Clip to allow you to use any K-cup® compatible pod in your Keurig® 2.0 machine – not just ours, but any one you like.

When we came up with this concept, and had a meeting to try to decide what a fair and reasonable price would be. One of my sons said, “How about nothing?”

So we decided to give these away for free, because we thought that was the right thing to do. And we thought it would be fun to poke the 800 pound Gorilla with a stick, so to speak. We also decided to give away samples of our OneCup coffee pods, because we like them so much and were hoping you would, too.

We had no idea that the response would be so enormous. We were completely unprepared for it.

We expected maybe 10,000 requests. To be safe, I ordered 30,000 Freedom Clips.

So we put the offer out there, and everything was going fine  -- just as expected -- until one weekend in late January.

That weekend, our free offer was picked up and announced by Fox News, People, CNN Money,  CNET, Huffington Post, the Guardian, and ConsumerAffairs, to name a few of the bigger ones.

To say the least, this was completely unexpected.

That weekend, our website and email servers crashed.

When I got to the office Monday morning, it was complete chaos. Our IT Department was running around, moving everything over to much larger servers. Almost everyone was on the phone. It was ringing so constantly that I thought it was malfunctioning. Those people who weren’t on the phone were dragging people from accounting, ecommerce, and sales into Customer Service to help. In fact, I had to hire another Customer Service person.

So there was a delay in entering and processing these orders. Plus, we had to order a bunch more Freedom clips from our manufacturer. And more envelopes. And postage. Etc, etc, etc.

We hired a company called Pride Industries to fulfill these Freedom Clip orders for us. Pride is a great company that employs people with disabilities. Unfortunately, however, they, too, were unprepared for the huge volume of requests that we received, so there were some serious delays in fulfillment.

To date we have taken many, many times more requests that we even dreamed possible.

In my 82 years on this planet, (65 of them in business), I have never seen anything like this.

Again, I am sorry for the delay, but we are doing the very best we can. Please know that we will honor each and every request.

    Thank you Rogers! I received my clip and 1 sample back in January. After trying the fog chaser I had to try more, so I ordered the 80 count sampler. Got a free clip with my order also. After about 10 cups my first clip broke, not sure how, so I wrote you figuring you might send another, that way I would have a spare. Well it took a little while but when it arrived to my surprise were 3 more samples of fog chaser! The second clip is working great! Just want to thank a great company with great coffee for standing up for the little guy. I am now a loyal customer.

    I found the link to the free Freedom Clip offer in the comments to a YouTube video, and immediately filled out a request. Then, after reading so many rave reviews about your coffee, I decided that I had to try some, and ordered a few varieties to try. Of course the Onecup pods came with a clip, so I was thrilled. That clip eventually broke and I taped it in place for a while, but no big deal. I can manage until I get a new one. But I have to say that your coffee is the best I’ve ever tasted. Particularly the Organic Rainforest Blend. You’ve earned a customer for life. Thank you.

      The coffee from this company is great, we just love it and have become regular customers. The most recent orders we have received have an orange colored ring on the label of the pods. This should make them work in the 2.0 even without the clip, so no need to wait to order more and enjoy. I noticed it because it was different from my previous order, but you may want to ask them just to be sure. So now the Freedom Clip is for other brands of K-cups that are not compatible with the 2.0.

    I love your coffee! I was waiting as most people are for the freedom clip and I pretty much gave up on getting one. So I decided to just buy a sample of the coffee since it includes the freedom clip. I bought the Fog Chaser sample and from the minute I opened it I knew it would be a winner! The aroma is fantastic, and I love the taste. I since have purchased more of the Fog Chaser and am trying the Java Love as well. Glad that I found your site.

      I had this same problem. I figure that the heat from the steam was causing the plastic of the clip to soften. I put a little super glue to hold it. Works perfectly.

    I did not order a clip because I use a French Press. Reading the note of apology Jon Rogers addressed to his customers certainly cements further my 20 or more plus year relationship with Rogers Family Coffee. All of the products are as good as the FAMILY and their constant motto of ‘do what is right’!!! Congratulations I have tried other coffee roasters, but there is none better than Rogers.

    I whined on here once about how long it took (3 months to get mine), but I understand, and hey, it finally came!

    I enjoyed snapping it onto the Kuerig forever ending its stupid DRM attempt.

    I wholly appreciate your companies want to correct things that are wrong in a way that you could. I get the feeling it’s not entirely profit driven and you really did want to keep the ‘freedom’ in coffee ;-).

    My sister and mother drink coffee (I don’t) so hopefully they’ll like the samples and will try some of your other products out.

    If you do read these comments- good on ya, thank you, and keep it up. At least there are some companies/people out there who still fight for personal freedom and the right to do as you please (even if it is something as trivial as packets of coffee :-p).

    We recently bought some boxes of coffee from you that included the clips, so I now have 2. You don’t need to send me another one. Also, including the clear plastic cups with the lids for airtight storage of a partial bag was a great idea.

    I wondered, but who can complain if something free doesn’t show up. Meanwhile, we have a simple workaround for pods that don’t read. A portion of the top cover from a “valid” cup is easy to stick on temporarily and it leaves the reader open for the Karafe cups to be read. So no worries, I’ll still buy your pods and enjoy them.

    I received my clip and it works like a charm. I also got one in a box of your coffee that I purchased. Your pods work better in my K2.0 than the actual K2.0 pods do. I have not had a single clog since I started using your pods. I did give my extra clip to a friend that was waiting for his and he now also uses your coffee pods.     I have bought Rainforest blend at Costco for years and would getting fresh daily that I took the leap of faith and purveyed from your site to get the freedom clip. Actually now I have two.     I received mine about a week ago! It did a while, but I figured it would, and I also figured the response would be MASSIVE! I am just happy you stood at your word… not found often these days! I never concerned myself with the speed of which it came; mostly because I am still currently relying on a normal coffee pot, but also, how can anyone complain when they are getting something for F-R-E-E!?!?!

    I don’t even own a Keurig 2 (yet) because my original model is still kickin’ butt but I REALLY wanted to try the Fog Chaser Eco-friendly cup samples that accompanied the offer.
    I put the clip away for when my old model bites it but I have to tell you, the Fog Chaser was one of the absolute BEST cups of coffee I’ve had in the last decade, easily. I gave a cup to my Mom (73) and she raved about it for weeks!

    Got my freedom clip 2 days ago. Snapped it in and it worked like a charm. Your fog chaser coffee is pretty good, too. I was given my Keurig for Christmas to replace an older one. I was not happy with the new machine’s blockage of non Keurig K-cups. Thank you for the coffee and clip, I will definitely buy Rogers coffee!

    Ah, you got slammed by the same problem smaller crowdsource campaigns run into when they unexpectedly go viral; It’s a high quality problem to have, but a problem nonetheless.

    Thank you for the update! To be honest I got this for a roomie who had been thinking about upgrading her keurig, but was a big fan of third party supplies (for all the usual reasons), and since she hadn’t yet I honestly had forgotten about the clip. (insert embarrassed look here!)

    So no panic, just get them out when you can; After all, this was WAY less expensive than some of those crowdsourced items, and will likely ship a lot sooner. 😀

    What a great company. I would never complain when you are sending me something for free. However, I see now why Keurig doesn’t want you to sell Pods. I received the free samples of fog chaser and made one for my husband. He took one sip and asked what I served him. He stated it was the BEST cup of coffee he’s ever had! So Keurig must have tried it too and now they are afraid of you. Thank you, we will be buying lots more coffee from you.

    I ordered the freedom clip to use with a new Keurig at work. Enjoyed the coffee samples so much that I ordered 120 pods. And I have a Keurig View at home. I figured how to remove a portion of the foil top of a used Vue pod, leaving just a portion at the spout where the machine made a puncture hole. I can slip a Rogers pod rim up under this foil to keep the pod in place. Now I can brew Rogers in a Vue machine. So simple.

    I come from a family of coffee roasters. My Uncle and Godfather owned and operated coffee mills. You have done a great service to the consumer. I am picky and choose coffee to satisfy my taste. I always used their brew your own cups. This allows me to continue that choice.

    Thank you for fighting back against the big guys. I received my clip and sample of Fog Chaser. Both are absolutely excellent products. I avoided purchasing a Keurig 2.0 machine due to information that you initially provided. I absolutely understand a coffee maker company offering a line of coffee pods to be used in their machines. Makes perfect sense. But to then go and prevent other manufacturers of pods from working in their machines is downright evil. You are doing a good thing, and I hope you prevail in your lawsuit.

I was getting ready to buy a new Kuerig maker and was not going to be blackmailed by their greedy marketing ploys.     The delay is understandable and I like the clip and its ease of use, but I’m a bit disappointed in it’s durability. I think you need to stiffen it up a bit. After a busy day for the keurig it softened up and fell off. Now it only lasts a cup or two before it comes loose. Maybe if you include a new one with certain size orders? Or stiffen up the clip portion on the inside edge.

    Your letter and response to potential customers says a lot about the integrity of your company. I don’t mind waiting for the clip. I was more interested in learning about and trying your coffee with the expected samples. Until the information about your Freedom clip came out I had never heard of your company here on the East Coast. I too don’t need the clip at this time, but I have an old Keurig coffee maker and anticipate it going out at any time and the only new singe service pots available on the market would be the new 2.0.

    I received the freedom clip and 3 pods of coffee 3 months after ordering in January. Once the clip was snapped into place I tried the Fog Chaser and was quite impressed. A smooth and rich coffee without the bitterness of some dark coffees. A few of my fellow employees tried it as well and now they all want the clip and coffee as well. I’m hooked.

    I just received your email today. What a mixed blessing it must have been to have to write this letter. Becoming – literally – “insta-famous” on the internet is something even the most prepared companies have a hard time navigating.

    While clearly the majority of people seeking the Freedom Clip won’t become repeat customers, I believe that the notoriety you gained from this – along with your lawsuit – will garner you a net positive after the short term.

    Additionally, as others have written, the vast majority of those seeking the Freedom Clip applaud your strong stance against this deplorable action by Keurig, and are grateful for both the legal action and the free circumvention you offered.

    Those that voice displeasure should simply be ignored. As someone who’s worked in retail, I’ve learned that “While the customer is always right, some customers aren’t worth having.” Those people who complain, or are abusive, to you about this squarely fall in the latter half.

    I wanted to say how great this company is, our household got a 2.0 machine for Christmas and we were very excited to try it! That was until we noticed the giant shortfall of only using the “new and improved” single serve cups! I prefer very strong brews and the cups even at the 4oz setting couldn’t make it strong enough and I missed my micro brew beans that I could grind myself and make the kind of cup that a spoon could stand up in and you have to chew it just to swallow it.
    After several months of not being happy and on the verge of returning the machine I searched the internet for a solution and found a link to the Freedom clip. Rejoice!!! Waited for a bit and the clip came in quite quickly considering and I really enjoyed the free samples.
    Then tragedy struck and we had a death in the family and our house was filled with many out of towners and out of country visitors. The coffee machine made at least 10 years worth of cups of coffee in this last month using regular sscups, Rogers cups and mostly the pack your own solo cups! The freedom clip held up fantastic to all the abuse, several solo cups did not fair so well. It did so well that all the out of towners got on the internet and ordered theirs or order coffee to get theirs but the ones from out of the country had a dilemma, would the Rogers company send the clip international? We are lucky enough to live close to Rogers so I gave them a call and explained the situation, they handled it perfectly and now several clips are living out their lives in foreign countries spreading the greatness of the Rogers family!!
    Thank you again for taking on the “big guys” but your company is a “big guy” in my book due to the quality of your products and the professionalism of your business!!

    Thank you. I was thinking about the Freedom Clip the other day and wondering what happened. We had been using your single serve coffee for years. We purchase the leaded stuff at Costco and use Amazon for decaf.
    Then, wham, the evil folks at Green Mountain changed all this with their new machine. We received ours as a replacement for one that died while under warranty. I was horrified when I learned that we had to use “approved” K Cups. As you know doubt know, the brewers have a history of endless quality problems and now they want to lock you into overpriced and environmentally unfriendly K cups.
    I am sure that most people that have used your coffee would be willing to pay for your Freedom Clip. Keep up the fight.

    Thanks for the letter Jon, sounds like a real busy time for you and the company. I personally want to than you for creating the Freedom Clip and making it available to everyone. I have been in contact with your customer service and even sent them a suggestion. I saw a Keurig hack on Youtube for the 2.0 machines where a a guy used a fluorescent yellow sharpie on a piece of white paper and taped it in the area where the Freedom Clip goes. It not only allows you to use any k-cup or reusable container, but it also unlocks the hidden menu so you can brew 12 to 16 oz ups and the carafe. I use the sharpie on a white sticker and put it in the Freedom Clip and it works great! I hope your team can change the colored dot in the Freedom Clip to the Florescent yellow so the other menu can be used by all. I sent the Youtube video to your CS. Thanks again! Great Job.

    I have received the ‘clip’ and my wife and I use it very often, every

    Congratulations to you and all involved in this service that was provided. I believe I was just as pleased with the outstanding customer service (an your letter) as I was with the ‘clip’. Keep showing your upcoming generations how good customer service is provided, not withstanding the success that comes with it.

    I received my clip and am so thankful for it. I can now use the coffee and tea I like . It ‘s so ice to know that there are some company’s that actually care and take the time for it s customers. I have a bit of a problem with the clip falling off.is there anyway I can put it in permanently? Thanks again, I am now able to really enjoy my coffee maker.

As a small business owner myself for the last 25 years, I can only imagine the excitement yet stress that this whole operation has been for you, your family and your employees. I appreciate you standing by your promise to try and stand up against a mega company and speak for the people.     Had to write again, as I just posted a comment a few minutes ago. Just for giggles I followed directions from UTube on how to bypass the scanner AND get more programmed options from your Kuerig 2.0. With my new Freedom Clip it was even faster and easier! I simply colored a small square of paper with a yellow fluorescent Sharpie, slipped it into the Freedom Clip so it covered the orange circle, and snapped the clip into place. I was immediately greeted with a whole new set of options on the screen! This was too easy! Thanks Rogers family for your willingness to help others and stopping the “big guys” in their tracks!! I’ll gladly buy your coffee over theirs.

    I asked for a free Freedom Clip just to solve the 2.0 problem, and AFTER that I started to check out the other things on your site. When I learned your business practices, I wanted to support your company and went ahead and bought a bunch of smaller trial sizes and a couple one-pod packs that came with a Freedom Clip. (Can’t have too many as back-ups.) I ended up getting the order first, loved your coffee, and will be ordering more on a regular basis now. I just ended up getting the free clip yesterday, with the samples of Fogchaser. I’ll have to start adding that flavor to my orders now. You guys are awesome, you’re a great company with amazing business practices, and I love supporting businesses that don’t believe in screwing people over to get ahead. The only complaint I have is the first Clip ended up snapping off one of the legs. It seems kind of flimsy. Guess it’s a good thing I have an extra now. Looking forward to getting my next order of different flavors to try!

    Thank you for the service you are providing. I purchased a Keurig 2.0 for my daughter and her family last Christmas, unaware of the sneaky trick that Keurig pulled on consumers. I ordered the clip a few weeks ago and it arrived with the samples. I sent the clip and 2 samples to my daughter so her problem would be solved. I tried a sample of the coffee you sent and loved it. I purchased 2 boxes and it is one of the best coffees that I have tried! Will definately keep using your coffee.
