Finca Santa Maura Total spent 2001-2006 = $130,222 Total budgeted 2007= $75,214 Background - A long term agreement was finalized with Santa Maura in 2000 and an initial needs assessment plan was completed in 2001. The farm already had several social projects in place so much of the focus was placed on updating current structures and programs. 2001 - Housing was improved by adding roofs, beds, and fixing the flooring. Total spent: $18,000.00
2002 - Plans were written to build a new school meant to serve over 200 local children. The old school consisted of one room which had been converted from an old fertilizer shed and still had a residual odor (see picture). Grades K through 6 were taught in one room. The budget was $32,500.00 but this year was used to locate outside funding to help with the expenses. Total spent: $0 2003 - Construction began on a new 6 room school with nursery. It was scheduled to open in September, but took longer and cost more than was expected, so it did not open until January of 2004. Books, teacher salaries, paper, desks, and other miscellaneous supplies were also provided. Total spent: $42,000 2004 - The new school opened and enrollment is up from 80 to 200 students (see picture below and on next page). This is partly due to the requirement that children can only play on the local little league team if they attend school (a free uniform is also provided to team members.) Reconstruction was completed on the main kitchen and daycare- the kitchen was added to the school and the daycare moved into a separate new building. RCF also sponsored a college scholarship at Zamorano, the top agricultural college in Central America for a local child, Jorge Luis Blandon. Total spent: $7,400 ** Since 2004, RFC has contributed $6,160 to send two additional students to Zamorano University. 2005 - 2006 - Plans were made to install a potable water system with hydroelectric lighting and complete the bathroom/shower complex. However, the farm’s owner ran into financial problems and none of the projects were accomplished. Supplies for the school, baseball program (see picture), and clinic continued to be disseminated. Total spent: $5,800 2007 - This year, we plan to complete the projects that had been planned for 2005-2006 and continue sponsoring three students at Zamorano University. Total budgeted: $75,214
