POST HALLOWEEN MUSTS
The dramatic, and frankly traumatic truth about Halloween is the terrifying torture we put our skin and hair through for a few hours of costumed fun. Monsters, zombies, vampires and more will be roaming the streets on Halloween, spackled with costume make-up and hair coloring. But no one is discussing the scary consequences of decorating our bodies with such damaging products. This stops now. 😉
We have put together a must have list of effective coffee based DIY beauty tricks to bring your skin & hair back to life after your Halloween fun.
The Face Recovery Mask
What You’ll Need:
- 1/2 Cup ground organic coffee beans (you can grind your own or buy pre-ground)
1/2 Cup organic, unsweetened cocoa powder
1 Cup of unsweetened whole milk (if you aren’t a dairy person, sub for unsweetened almond milk)
1 Tbsp of lemon juice (for dry skin, try olive or almond oil)
1 Tbsp of honey (for extra oily or acne prone skin, use additional lemon juice here instead of honey)
In your bowl, mix the finely ground coffee beans with the cocoa powder. Add in the milk, stir until it creates a paste. For a thicker paste, use less milk. Fold in lemon juice and honey. Apply to skin and let dry (up to 20 minutes). Wash off and store any extras in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- For extra exfoliation, apply in circular motions for a quick scrub (1-2 minutes), then allow to dry.
For dark circles, mix the finely ground coffee beans with enough milk or olive oil to form a paste and apply to the under eye area once a day. Allow to dry and rinse off. The caffeine will promote healthy circulation and decrease inflammation that results in dark circles and under eye bags.
Benefits of the Ingredients:
Coffee Beans – Reduces inflammation and redness, and the appearance of under eye circles. As an exfoliator, removes dead skin and “wakes up” a tired complexion. Cocoa Powder – A good source of antioxidants; repairs damage due to environmental pollutants and free radicals. Contains high levels of sulfur (great for fighting acne). Milk – Lactic acid exfoliates while natural enzymes help to smooth skin. Amino acids keep skin hydrated. Lemon Juice – Acts as an exfoliant. Contains natural vitamin C to lighten, tighten and brighten. Great for regulating oil production. Honey – A natural humectant that locks in moisture.

This scrub is made from just 4 — natural — ingredients: ground coffee, coconut oil, coconut palm sugar, and ground cinnamon. Try to buy everything organic, if possible. So, let’s talk benefits!
Coffee is rich in antioxidants, making it an awesome anti-inflammatory ingredient. It contains caffeine, which draws out excess moisture from your skin, causing it to look and feel smoother and firmer. In this scrub, coffee acts as a mild exfoliant, removing dead skin cells and exposing fresh, soft skin.
Coconut oil is one of our favorite natural beauty ingredients over here. It’s incredibly moisturizing and filled with vitamins and minerals, which it locks securely into your skin.
Coconut palm sugar acts as a second exfoliant in this scrub. For more of a deep exfoliation, you can use a sugar with
Cinnamon helps to clear your skin of any bacteria. It also brings blood to the surface of the skin, helping to smooth out any lines that may be present.
- 1/2 cup ground coffee
1/2 cup coconut palm sugar
1/4 cup coconut oil
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
To make the scrub, mix all of the ingredients together until well-combined. If your coconut oil is solid, gently heat it until it melts, but wait for it to go back to room temperature before adding the other ingredients. This is to ensure that your exfoliants don’t dissolve in the oil! Once mixed, store your scrub in an air-tight container.

- One teaspoon ground coffee (you may want to grind your own twice or run ground coffee through an at-home grinder to get a finer ground)
- One teaspoon lemon juice
- One teaspoon salt
- One teaspoon honey
And scrub (gently) on your face in small circles. It’s important to be gentle and not rub it harshly into your face because coffee grounds are inherently rough – you don’t want to tear your skin! Let it stand there for a few minutes, and then wash off with a face wash – otherwise, if you just rinse it away, you’ll be left with a nice coffee tan.
