WILL THEY TAKE CREAM OR SUGAR?
In a recent interview, Seth Shostak Senior Astronomer and Director, Center for SETI Institute, was asked about the possibility of picking up a signal from an alien life. He said:
I bet everyone here a cup of coffee that we’ll find aliens within two dozen years. (Read full interview here.)
SO WHERE ARE MY ALIENS?
According to my favorite 80's movies, we should have flying cars, floating skateboards, and my next door neighbor should be a resident of two galaxies. This sadly is not the case. Although, we do have some pretty amazing gadgets and advancements in science that verge on the science fiction.
But what about the possibility of life on other planets, in other galaxies for away? Is it possible? Is it a foregone conclusion that we simply are too naïve to admit or just pure fantasy that has been crammed into our imagination by Hollywood? I have no idea. There are many dedicated scientists and space enthusiasts that say it is not only possible, but a certainty. They say that without question, intelligent life exists on other planets and that the sheer vastness of space is proof that we cannot be alone.
I've been alive long enough to know that nothing is set in stone, and there is no such thing as a sure thing, but I do have hope. Hope that, if aliens do land on Earth, they are nothing like:
- War of the Worlds
- Event Horizon
And more like:
- Hitch Hikers Guide to the Universe
AN INTERGALACTIC PROMISE
Here is our promise back to Mr. Seth Shostak. If/When you pick up that alien signal and indeed you have confirmation of a real ET type life form, the coffee is on us.
