Rogers Family Company hosts coffee naming contest

A local coffee company and New York-based wild cat conservation organization are launching an online coffee naming contest today to benefit jaguar conservation.

Rogers Family Coffee

Rogers Family Company, a roaster and producer of organic, responsibly grown coffee and tea, and Panthera, an organization whose work to save the jaguar was recently featured on "60 Minutes," are holding the contest on their Facebook pages.

Panthera Coffee Naming

Rogers Family Co. developed a new coffee for Panthera, which is described as a custom blend of shade-grown, organic beans from the highlands of Mexico's Chiapas region and the Concordia area of Colombia, which company officials say are important conservation areas for jaguars, a Rogers Family Co. news release states. The coffee will have "hints of cacao, a lively bright taste and smooth body," Vice President Jim Rogers said in a written statement.

Central American and Colombian coffee farms have shared the jaguar's habitat as traditional farming involved shade-grown coffee, which thrives under the forest canopy, but the farms are increasingly being converted into full-sun plantations to maximize profits - at the expense of jaguars and other wildlife, the release states. Rogers Family Co. exclusively uses shade-grown coffee farming.

Twenty percent of online sales for the new coffee will go directly to Panthera.

Participants can enter creative names for the new coffee beginning today. When the initial phase ends, a committee of Rogers Family Co. and Panthera employees will pick four of the most creative names, and Facebook fans will then get to vote. Everyone who votes will receive a $1 off coupon for Panthera coffee. Click here to visit Rogers Family Co.'s Facebook page and enter the contest or here to visit Panthera's Facebook page.

The winner will receive 12 (12-ounce) bags of the new blend, a $500 donation from the Rogers Family Co. to Panthera in the winner's name, a collection of signed Panthera wild cat conservation books and photographs, and photographs of jaguars in the wild that will be mailed to the winner throughout the year, the release states.

Rogers Family Co. supplies its coffee through various divisions and brands, including the Organic Coffee Company and San Francisco Bay Premium Gourmet Coffee.
