The Revolution Has Begun - Our Fight Against Keurig®

Don't be fooled by the glitz and glam, Keurig® Green Mountain has one targeted focus. MAKE YOU BUY THEIR COFFEE.

In late August Keurig® released their newest brewer, the Keurig® 2.0, and they launched it with a ton of fanfare. Major internet and TV campaigns on the scale of a new iphone release were created for this coffee maker. But why? Why put so much hype into marketing the brewer?

Two Reasons For The Hype:

  1. The machine doesn't allow you to brew anything but their coffee
  2. And a 9% price hike on their coffee followed the release of the brewer

That ought to make you angry and if it doesn't, try this on for size. Keurig® Green Mountain also visited their retail customers and began a fear campaign tied directly to the "lockout" technology. They told these retail customers that all other non-Keurig® approved coffees would not work and should be dropped from the shelves.

We are fighting back hard. Not only for our business, but for your freedom of choice.

Introducing the FREEDOM CLIP. This small clip will allow a Keurig® 2.0 brewer to read and brew any and all single serve coffee pods, Keurig® Approved or Not.

Whether you are a customer of ours or not, this clip will give you back what Keurig® has taken away.

You can already use their (Rogers) San Francisco Bay coffees with the K2V cups from Fog Chaser and Rainforest Blend are just about all I use in my VUE unit. I called Keurig when I first heard about their version of coffee DRM and told them I would not be buying any of their coffee or even a V2.0 coffeemaker.

  3. Silvia 2 December, 2014 at 10:53 Reply

Keurig has to be very insecure about their coffees’ quality and k-cup competitiveness when they decided to block their machine to other brands.
Thank you Roger family for the freedom clip.

  4. Robert Clark 5 December, 2014 at 11:56 Reply

Green Mountain’s anticompetitive and despicable bluff and fear campaign against merchants and public, along with its easily defeatable and legally unenforceable “DRM”system, is the action of a dying monopoly. The public has already recognized the emperor has lost his clothes and is walking away, and it’s just a matter of time until his vassal coffee companies’ contracts expire and they follow. Savvy retailers should immediately give shelf space to all the great coffees found outside the Keurig Kingdom and provide consumer education with a Freedom Clip every sale. That’s how to beat this bully, with choice, price, quality, information, and a 10¢ piece of plastic. The freedom clip is a brilliant tactic, and I can’t wait to get mine.

  5. Necole 12 December, 2014 at 04:21 Reply

Or you can just buy one of the many reusable cups available. Then you can even brew your own fresh ground coffee if you want. Or you could buy a french press. 🙂

      • Alan Fijalkowski 15 December, 2014 at 14:14 Reply

Even with the Freedom Clip, I’ve found the reusable cups still don’t even fit in the 2.0 assembly. Supposedly there is ONE brand of reusable cup that fits, but I can’t find it anywhere. I hate buying individual cups because they clog landfills and are more expensive than necessary, and i never drink more than one – two cups per day.

UPDATE: The video I saw on YouTube shows the “SoloFill K3” as working with the 2.0. $12 at WalMart. Viva la Revolution!

I temporarily have cut off the top of keurig cups and taped them to all sorts of other cups from various stores. It is one huge pain but when I receive the freedom clip I hope those days are over. I hope, I hope!

The first keuring I bought was the 2.0. I do like the ability to only have 1 or 2 cups if that all you’re looking for instead of the whole pot. Had no idea you had to use specific kcups. We now have 3 boxes we can’t use. Tried buying the reusable solofill k3 and it definitely doesn’t work with it. I know a couple companies that are in love with you over this

  9. MM 22 December, 2014 at 13:58 Reply

I encourage everyone with a 2.0 to not only order the Freedom Clip, but to write to all of your favorite K-Cup vendors who have licensed the Keurig DRM. I had started drinking Pete’s K-Cups, which I noticed were packaged and manufactured by a vendor unknown to me. However, with the release of 2.0, I see now the coffee pods are being manufactured by Green Mountain. Companies like Pete’s need to understand that they cannot give in to bullies like Keurig. I have never liked Green Mountain coffee. If they truly made an excellent product it would stand on its own merit and people would buy it without forcing their proprietary technology onto them. Pete’s decision has not only undermined the economy of a smaller business, who no longer has the contract with Pete’s, but enabled Green Mountain to persist in their illegal practices. Further, Green Mountain has done little but pay lip-service to improving the ecology of their K-cups, and why should they. With the market cornered, sinking profits into R&D, and more expensive manufacturing methods would only undermine their business model. 2.0 only ensures no one else can undercut them with the promise of a more eco-friendly product without giving them a share of the profits, without lifting a finger.

Thank you so much for the freedom clip!! My husband and I have tried many different coffee brands and ran across the rogers family coffees and have not looked back! Our machine needed an update and we bought the 2.0 for our Christmas present. When we heard that the cups would not fit we didn’t know what to do, so we decided to wait until after our coffee is gone before opening the new machine. With the freedom clip, from the outstanding rogers family, we are thankful that we can still drink the coffee we love!! Here’s to freedom of choice!! Thank you! Go get’em!!

  11. Jeremy 25 December, 2014 at 06:27 Reply

I dont have a Keurig machine myself and probably wont honestly. I prefer french press and will go through the extra effort to have my coffee like that or I wont have it.

HOWEVER…we bought a 2.0 for my father for Christmas because my mother said he really commented a lot on his neighbors. I only discovered this nonsense after we had bought and wrapped his gift. I know what his reaction will be to all of this and I agree wholeheartedly. I only wish I had know of this sooner so we could deliver your contraption along with the gift!

I suspect he will continue to be a Folgers drinker and I’ll bet they are playing along but still, its nice to know these are available.

I salute you for STICKING IT TO THA MAN !!!

We are sorry to report that the Freedom Clip shipping dates have been delayed. While our initial plan was to have the Freedom Clips shipped out to everyone before Christmas we have run into some timing issues and the clips did not begin shipping until after the new year. Please rest assured that your clip is on the way and should arrive soon. Additionally we have included a free OneCup pod and a special discount coupon code with every Freedom Clip. Again we are sorry for the delay and we appreciate your patience. Happy New year.

I really enjoyed my first Keurig, but now there are lots of coffee companies making the brewers, so Keurig better watch out. I foolishly bought the 2.0 at Costco, but returned it as soon as I realized it was K-Cup only. I found the older models at BB&B for less money AND BB&B had a good supply of newer types of reusable cups. In my old brewer, the lid of the Keurig reusable cup kept breaking. The ones I found at BB&B seem much better made.

Just curious if anyone who ordered theirs early have gotten them yet. I ordered mine just before Christmas and am wondering about the delivery time after order. It’s a free product, and one in greatly looking forward to (especially since I added a lot of San Francisco coffee to my Amazon Subscribe and Save and on its way), but I do have some of the evil branded coffee, tea and cocoa to hold me over until then.

While K Cups are fun, tasty and convenient they are also very expensive compared to traditional brewing. Keurig should understand that they may be destroying their own market by unfairly increasing costs. It’s easy and cheap to go back to the world of Mr Coffee!

I was also very excited to get a 2.0 for Christmas but then found out about the restrictions on what you can use in it, thank you for this article.

  19. Michelle 3 January, 2015 at 20:20 Reply

Like so many others, I am so excited about the freedom clip. I received the Keurig 2.0 as a Christmas gift. I was so excited about it until I started to use it and realized I had pods I couldn’t even use. My son saw online you can do a trick using a lid from a Keurig pod by peeling it off (which i did do and it works) but needless to say peeling and taping took all the ease and convenience right out of it! Then I realized this also meant I could not use the refillable pod I had. The only perk to this machine was you had the option to brew a carafe, but even then I looked into the cost of those and ouch, it really made the 2.0 not at all a good option for me. I decided to return the 2.0 for the elite series. When asked by the store associate why i was returning it, I simply said keurig ruined a good thing. The cost was more reasonable, but more importantly I have the freedom to use pods of my choice. Being honest though, I miss the 2.0 as I did find it brewed a nicer cup of coffee, had the touch screen and held more water. I’m not even sure how I stumbled upon the freedom clip offer but I am so glad I did! I wish I had seen it before I returned my 2.0, but I requested one and can (and plan to) go back to the 2.0 thanks to you! The freedom clip you’re offering means we can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee of our choice without the added expense of being forced into buying a Keurig only product. Thank you! Any chance you will be offering a refillable k carafe pod?? That would really make you our hero!! 🙂

The Keurig DRM coffee makers are not being well received by the buying public. I was looking at coffee makers at Kohl’s and the sales associate warned me that a lot of people are returning them. The requirement to only use Keurig pods is unacceptable to many people. When an item has a high return rate, retailers will stop selling them. Keurig has made a major mistake, the full extent of the damage will play out over the next few quarters. If they had any sense, they would abandon this bad idea before they damage themselves any further.

We figured out how to bypass their bypass their “restricted measure” before we even bought it. That said, it’s kind of a dirty trick, but it’s business. Soon, the coding will be so complex it will rival the ink-jet printer’s next generation of proprietary ink restrictions.

  26. Phil Peters 25 January, 2015 at 16:21 Reply

Right on! I buy many generic “K-cups” and Keurig is only trying to insist that I either buy their coffee or coffee manufactured by someone that has paid them a licensing fee. I didn’t know that they had raised their price, but I knew that it would be the next step after they effectively put themselves in the position of being a monopoly and “taxing” every cup of coffee that I drink.

  28. NoKcups 29 January, 2015 at 13:58 Reply

Personally I think the K-cup machines should be banned just because of the waste generated – 3billion+ cups per year? The excess of K-cups on grocer’s shelves has severely cut into the space for “normal” bean/ground coffees.

Got my Freedom Clip the other day, awesome. However, I am also using the “magnet mod” to allow me to select any menu option. The Freedom clip assumes that you do not want to use a VUE cup (not sure if it works with a Carafe cup though, and due to the color of the dot on the clip, I could no longer select all of the menu options.

So, I modded the clip…hehe…by putting the greenish colored foil dot (from of a VUE cup) that I was using before I got the Freedom Clip, and put it over the orange colored dot on the Freedom Clip.

Now it works awesomely, and I no longer have a foil dot taped to my Keurig.

Adn the three sample coffees I got were a nice addition.

It seems to me, Keurig can be sued for falsely marketing their product as a”coffee brewer ” when it is, in fact, a”delivery mechanism” for Green Mountain beverage products? Also, I was thrilled when “Keurig” did not just show up as a valid word while I was texting this.

A couple of years ago I bought the Keurig Vue, the latest and greatest product the at a local Walmart.
At first the shelves were filled with the machines and the various vue packets. A few months later I could rarely find one.
I wrote email to both Walmart and Keurig complaining that they were doing a product Pump and Dump and demaning satisfaction.
Walmart did not even bother to respond.
Keurig responded by wanting to set me up an account to buy the vue packets directly from them.
I will never buy another product by Keurig and hopefully never buy an appliance from Walmart.

We still use our old Keurig and the Keurig’s that both my husband and I keep at our offices, but we will only use Rogers Family Coffee brands moving forward. Cheers to the little guy!

I was ecstatic 🙂 Our household loves you guys coffee and what you do for farmers and communities. Your coffee is out of this world quality and taste wise and doesn’t even hold up to what keurig sells. They should be ashamed of themselves for not allowing the consumers to have choices beyond what they offer. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the freedom clip! you guys rock!

Thanks for standing up and giving us the freedom to choose.

You’ve gained a new customer in me; thank you for so willingly doing this, fighting for independent coffee makers such as yourself as well as for the customers. 🙂 I purchased a 2.0 on sale at Wal-Mart; I loved it until I realised the whole DRM thing. But, certain there were hacks, I looked online and sure enough, I found your site, and signed up for a freedom clip. I’ll certainly be buying some coffee from you!

Keurig has done a very stupid thing with this DRM, and I hope that they realise how utterly foolish they’ve been. They get plenty of money, I am sure, from selling Keurigs themselves. And from selling the K-Carafes. Why do they need to monopolise the rest? ¬_¬

I like to brew my own coffee. I mean, I do buy official Keurig products too, but I like variety, and I also like using my own coffee. They’d gain a better reputation if they were did away with the monopolisation!

But anyway, thank you for the freedom clip that’s incoming, good luck in your fight, I’m behind ya, and I’ll be buying your coffee (it sounds delicious!)

We bought a Keurig2.0/450. we did not know all the technicalities of it. We thought we would save on wasted coffee with refill cups, then found out there were none compatible. It was noisy, had to use 2 sizes of cups to get a full mug.We got the Freedom Clip but it kept falling out when I opened the maker to do additional ounces and the plastic bent. Metal would be better..Also the carafe did not keep it hot when we tried it. WE TOOK IT BACK. Went to Bed Bath, they had the Remington OPus iCUP. Wow what a difference! A brand Roers reccomended on their site. Compatible to all k cups and have there own refill cup for it. It is a spin Brew. You can choose size by the ounce and 1/2 oz. up to 12 oz. which is a plus.SOOOO quiet too! Also their customer service gets right back to you for questions you may have. They even sent me a free refill cup. We are so Happy Now!

Hey folks…OK, you got PO’d about Keurig’s monopoly and came out with the Freedom Clip. Now, since you made your pods work without the clip, you’ve stopped selling the clip RATHER than depending upon the quality & price of your product to sell it…of course, also preventing customers from buying the clip and then getting coffee pods from NEITHER Keurig nor you.
