When you see something like this, the first reaction is NOPE, but (hehe) at second glance the answer is still NOPE with a slight "Eh, maybe".

According to NPR, the No.1 most expensive coffee in the world is now coming to you straight from an elephant's behind.

Canadian entrepreneur Blake Dinkin, 44, is betting his life savings that he can turn his idea into, well, gold. Here's the catch: His Black Ivory Coffee is made by passing coffee beans through the not insubstantial stomachs of elephants and then picking the beans out of, well, yeah, that.

I know, lots of thoughts running through your head right now:

  1. Why?
  2. How?
  3. Why?

On the surface this just seems absurd. The price itself is way out of my budget, over $500 for the coffee (30 cups worth) & a special grinder and let's not forget the process.

As described by Black Ivory Coffee:

Coffee beans are naturally refined by street rescued Thai elephants at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Chiang Saen, (Northern) Thailand.

So, here is where the story took a nice turn for me. A portion of his proceeds, 8%, will go towards hiring a veterinarian to work at the Gold Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation and any remaining money will be used for medicine at the same facility.

If you are interested in cashing out your retirement to purchase two week's worth of coffee you will need to pump the breaks. Currently the product is 99% exclusive to Thailand, with the exception of a single location in Texas called The Elephant Story. Although he does have packages for sale online.

If you take the leap and buy some of this coffee, you must, absolutely must send us a pic and a little story about the experience. Just promise your kids or grandkids their inheritance went to a good cause.
